The Caucasus region offers some of the most spectacular driving routes in the world. Many travelers landing in Tbilisi plan to explore not just Georgia, but neighboring Armenia as well. The route from Tbilisi to Yerevan is popular for its changing landscapes, historical monasteries, and culinary experiences.
However, crossing an international border with a rental vehicle is a legal procedure that requires strict adherence to specific rules. Unlike driving within the country, you cannot simply drive across the border without prior authorization.
At Star Car, we strive to make your cross-border adventure possible. This guide details everything you need to know about rent a car in Georgia for international travel, including the necessary paperwork, costs, and timeframes.
The most critical information for travelers is that cross-border permissions cannot be issued instantly. If you plan to visit Armenia, you must inform our team at least 3 working days before your rental period begins.
This timeframe is necessary because the authorization process involves a notary. Our legal team must physically take the vehicle's registration documents to a notary public and create a formal Power of Attorney in your name. This document legally authorizes you to take the vehicle out of the country.
Important: If you request this service upon arrival or less than three days in advance, we will not be able to process the documents, and you will be restricted to driving within Georgia.
To cover the administrative work and notary fees, Star Car charges a one-time fee of 100 EUR.
This fee is separate from the daily rental rate and is paid once per rental agreement, regardless of how many days you spend in Armenia. It covers the preparation of the English and Russian translated Power of Attorney required by customs officers.
It is essential to understand the regional geopolitics when planning your route. Our insurance and authorization cover specific borders only:
When you arrive at the Sadakhlo or Bagratashen border crossing points, the customs officers will request a specific set of documents. Please ensure you have the following ready:
Insurance Note: Please be aware that the insurance provided by Star Car covers the vehicle within the territory of Georgia. Once you cross the border, you are required to purchase local Armenian mandatory traffic insurance (CMTPL). This can be bought directly at the border crossing and typically costs between $10 and $15 depending on the duration of your stay.
While the main highway connecting Tbilisi and Yerevan is in fair condition, exploring the depths of Armenia often requires a more robust vehicle. Roads leading to Lake Sevan, Tatev Monastery, or Dilijan can be uneven or undergoing construction.
For a comfortable and safe journey, we recommend that you rent a car from our SUV category. Vehicles such as the Toyota Prado or Subaru Forester offer higher ground clearance and better suspension, ensuring that potholes or gravel roads do not hinder your experience.
Driving from Georgia to Armenia is an unforgettable experience, but it requires responsibility and planning. By notifying us 3 days in advance and handling the administrative fee, you ensure a hassle-free crossing.
